The stresses of life are absorbed by the body and molded into characteristic shapes: rounded shoulders, tight abdomen, and sunken chest, to name a few examples. Injuries, movement habits, and wear and tear take their toll. When the body is under such stress it is difficult for the mind to find freedom and ease. Relaxation begins, therefore, with the body.
Deep physical relaxation does not occur merely by “letting go,” as in sleep, or like flopping into a chair after a day’s work. In Yoga, the principle of relaxation is to eradicate these impressions of stress. This is accomplished by supporting the body in various postures so that areas of tension can be released. Gradually, this postural freedom becomes habitual and the body is left with a feeling of ease during daily activities.
A passive practice of postures complements an active practice, just as the cycle of daily life needs to include both rest and activity. Without enough daily activity, the quality of sleep deteriorates; Without adequate rest, energy levels drop and the body and mind are not refreshed. Too much or too little of either effort or sleep leads to imbalance. Hence, restorative postures must be done regularly.
